I think it is not only important but also a moral duty that those of us who are fortunate enough to have a chance at expressing ourselves in a public forum, such as film, to endeavor to uplift and inspire our audiences. As with my previous documentary about Sitting Bull (Sitting Bull: A Stone in My Heart), Adam Fortunate Eagle, the subject of this film, measures up to that standard. Like most Native Americans he has been a victim of racism and injustice. And despite the many obstacles that confronted him, he rose to become a successful businessman and dedicated his life to improving conditions in the lives of Native Peoples. Although his activism eventually cost him his business and forced him to move back to the reservation, he turned a negative experience into a positive one and became one of our finest Indian ceremonial pipe makers and sculptors as well as a respected author of three published books.

I hope that his life, as revealed in Contrary Warrior, will serve to inspire young people of all cultures that they, too, can turn their lives around in a positive direction. This is the reason why I chose to make a film about Adam. His story is a positive life-lesson and we need more of that from our filmmakers.
